Road Runner, Land of Hope,

and Soul Foundation

Time For Action- was the first single released from the Glory Boys album on I-SPY Records on August 16th 1979.

It was issued originally in a limited edition plain brown paper cover with the keyhole logo and later appeared as a plain black cover with keyhole design. So successful was the single it took Secret Affair to Top of The Pops and placed them in the charts forthe first time on September 1st 1979 ! The video (not aired on TOTP) featured the original Glory Boy fans (including a 15 year old Eddie Piller) and after filming resulted in a bit of a ruck by all accounts...or so I am told.Time for Action reached number 13 in the charts and stayed in the charts for 10 weeks selling over 200,000 copies.

This classic Mod Anthem penned by Dave Cairns also featured the Glory Boys Choir who offered the extra backing vocals!!

Due to demand there were several bootleg copies made of the single both in the UK and abroad (as pictured.)

The B Side featured the well remembered Soho Strut track created by Ian Page.

Let Your Heart Dance (pictured left) was released October 23rd 1979 andentered the charts on November 10th peaking at number 33 and staying charted for 6 weeks. This great dance track remains one of the most requested tracks to this day.

B side

Sorry Wrong Number

(Cairns/Page)

My World was the follow up single from the Behind Closed Doors album released Feb 21st in 1980.Penned by Dave Cairns this beautifully produced single remains to many the ultimate Secret Affair track and placed the band in the charts yet again-reaching number 16 in the charts on March 8th and remained in the charts for 9 weeks. The artwork featured a map of the world in the centre of the disc and for a time you could buy the My World badges with the same logo.Taken from the second album it was the track that featured during the World Tour of 1980.

The B Side So Cool was a track penned by Ian Page and reflected the more soulful image of the band.

The next single was Sound of Confusion released in August 1980 and entering the charts August 23rd for 5 weeks, peaking at number 45.Later the band regretted this choice of release which was a departure from their original sound but nonetheless received a modicum of success.

Another Dave Cairns single with the B side Take it Or Leave it a Page /Cairns masterpiece that highlighted the vocal skills of Pagey and was another great dance track!

September 16th 1981 saw the release of Do You Know? and the ever popular B side Dancemaster track.Entering the charts on October 17th it reached number 57 in the charts but dropped out after a mere 4 weeks despite much airplay and television appearances. It appeared as though the Mod Revival had seen its day just when the band were offering their finest performances to date.

January 8th 1982 saw the final single Lost In The Night (Mac The Knife) anmd the powerful track The Big Beat which sadly failed to chart at all

"They oozed sheer class, looked incredibly dapper, boasted a proper singer in
Page and a superb songwriter in Cairns. And sure enough, their first single
Time For Action was without a doubt the masterpiece of the Mod revival.
It's message was simple; it was time for a new dance.

Secret Affair scored two further bit hits, 'Let Your Heart Dance' (a
Motown-esque anthem with horns) and the more sophisticated 'My World'; and
recorded three under-rated albums, which still pay testament to their
talents to this day."-EDDIE PILLER

SECRET AFFAIR-TIME FOR ACTION

The Very Best of

BMG Records

Not the best of the collection to be honest. The artwork is poor and the track choice does not reflect the bands 3 albums very succinctly.

My advice is to buy the double CD Secret Affair Time For Action Anthology (see below)

THE LAST LIVE SHOW featured the band as their original line up from 1982 at The Scala Kings Cross. A sell out show showed the band still rock with some spectacular guitar sequences from Mod God Dave Cairns and the voice of the Mod Father Ian Page!

The line up:

Ian Page

Dave Cairns

Dennis Smith

Dave Winthrop

Paul Bultitude

22 Live tracks and a candid and amusing interview before the show with Ian and Dave.

An absolute delight to watch!

TIME FOR ACTION

A collectionof Mod Revival hits to accompany the TV series recentently aired on LWT Sounds of Underground London ( SOUL)

features Secret Affair amongst other Mod Revival bands of the time.Sleeve notes written by Eddie Piller.

SOUL, 'Sounds Of Underground London', was a music
documentary series presenting 50 years in the life of the
underground music scene, charting the history of British youth
culture and in particular its relationship with black and soul music.
Along with the fans of the various youth cultures, the series
featured Rock’n’Roll artists from the late 50's to some of the
biggest names in music today. From the first Teddy Boys, SOUL
takes us right up to the present day Jazz Funk scenes.
The series mixes superb unseen archive footage along with
revealing interviews as well as the occasional impromptu
performance.
SOUL provides viewers with a fascinating insight to post-war
British and International music.
The soundtracks from the series were released on 8 cds
from Sanctuary Records and available at all good record
shops. Online www.mudhut.co.uk

Programme 2 was aptly named Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances. (Mods)
The Modernists were the epitome of British youth in the 1960’s. The parka
and scooter have passed into the national consciousness as a symbol of
rebellious youth. The programme looks at the origins of the Mods (through
early 60’s music) and their impact on culture, media and fashion throughout
their reign. The programme contains the last interview given by The Who’s
John Enwistle, who sadly died recently. The show also includes contributions
from: Georgie Fame, Geno Washinton, Kenny Jones (The small faces), Chris
Farlowe, Ali McKenzie (The Birds) and Jeffrey Kruger MBE.

Programme 6 was named Down In The Tube Station At Midnight. (Mod Revival).
A general dissatisfaction with the Punk ethic of Anarchy led the next
generation to look backwards for inspiration. Scooters and bank holiday
weekends again dominated the tabloids. Bands such as SECRET AFFAIR and THE JAM were
some of the new bands that spread into sixties Soul and sharp suits.
Contributions from: Franc Roddam (Director, Quadrophenia), John Entwistle
(The Who), Ian Page (Secret Affair), Buddy Ascot (The Chords) and Gary
Crowley.
